The Secondary Campus includes the junior high (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Since 1894, St. Joseph Catholic School has provided guidance and development of the whole child — mind, body, and spirit. In 1998, St. Joseph Catholic High School graduated its first high school class as a continuation of our commitment to excellence in education.
The small school environment encourages students to be involved and allows teachers the opportunity to give individualized attention. The family atmosphere allows students to bolster life-long friendships in a faith-filled environment of learning and healthy competition.
The basic curriculum includes language arts, science, social studies, math (Algebra is offered in eighth grade) and religious education. Choices in electives are band, art, creative writing and other options. Course and elective selections are decided at enrollment (and thereafter in each spring semester) with the help of our school counselor. Enrichment classes include Spanish, computer applications, physical education, art and band.
Furthermore, students attend an annual religious retreat and participate in Mass twice a week and on Holy Days of Obligation. Smaller classes encourage student participation, allow teachers to pay attention to individual students and bolster a friendly, family-like atmosphere where each child is encouraged to express his or her individuality in a learning, competitive, and Christian environment.
Beginning in sixth grade, students may also participate in a variety of extracurricular activities including football, volleyball, band, cheerleading, basketball, student council, cross country and academic contests through PSIA (Private School Interscholastic Association).
The High School program offers a college preparatory curriculum to all students, which includes basic core classes and an expanding variety of electives.
Fundamental to any high school program is its extracurricular activities. St. Joseph has participated in and developed a winning tradition in all aspects of academic, art and sports-related competition. The High School competes in TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) competitions in football, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, cross country, track, cheerleading, band, music, art and a full range of academic topics. An outstanding 98% of the students are involved in some aspect of academic, art, music or athletic competition.
SJCS is accredited by the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department.
St. Joseph Catholic High School Student Service Program
Integral to living the Christian example is the service of others, especially to the poor and the vulnerable. Jesus assures us that whenever we serve “the least of his brothers,” we serve him (Matthew 25:31-46). The High School Student Service Program is one way that St. Joseph School students live the Christian example of service.
Through the Student Service Program, students will:
Junior and seniors have the opportunity to take dual-credit courses at Blinn College. Students in the 11th grade can take dual-credit English and American History. Students in 12th grade can take dual-credit English. You must be approved before enrolling up for these courses.
